If you’ve been to the Penticton Farmers’ Market, or a wedding, or a dinner outside under the Okanagan sunset and stars, there’s a good chance you’ve encountered delicious bites and pastries from Joy Road Catering. Their offerings at the market sell out early in the morning, and to get a seat at their alfresco dinners you must book as soon as seats open, or you’ll miss out.

Or so it was for more than a dozen years, and then it all changed. Both in ownership, a transition planned months ago, and jumping into the deep end of taking over a business under the pressure caused by the pandemic.

New owners Brett Turner and Olivia Fobert — who also run Cocktails & Canapes in Vancouver — spent much of summer of 2019 preparing to take over Joy Road as they expanded their catering and events to the South Okanagan, only to have to rethink their 2020 plans. And they rebooted with great new options.

You’ll now see a shipping container in downtown Penticton on Winnipeg Street, next to The Black Antler, temporary business accommodations  on what will eventually become the site of their new year-round catering kitchen and bakery. For now, “The Container” is open from 9am to 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays for breads, pastries, granolas, and other Joy Road favourites. Or, take advantage of their Market Shop for curated market bags for pick up, loaded with select breads, preserves, produce, and more.

And while plans are emerging for those alfresco dinners to return soon (get on their email list to be alerted, or check out the calendar), you can bring the alfresco ingredients and dishes home, as picture above — a generous box delivered with multi-course dishes. Charcuterie, bread, salad, dinner and side dishes, and of course, dessert…plus a bottle of local wine to pair.

Everything in the Long Table Dinner Box simply needs heating and plating, and is delivered in compostable or recyclable containers, true to Joy Road’s philosophy to be sustainable, from supporting local, organic ingredients, right down to their takeout materials.

Finally, look for Saturday night long table dinners returning as of July 17, heading to Blue Bee Orchard in Naramata.
