SummerGate Winery is looking for 5 fabulous people to create a terrific team to care for our 20 acres of organic grapes. The ideal candidates are energetic, motivated, take pride in their work and place of employment, enjoy working outside, work quickly and reliably both as part of a team and independently. SummerGate Winery, part of Summerland’s Bottleneck Drive Association, produces small lots of fresh, aromatic wines from our own organically-grown grapes. We are a family-run business, and predominantly a destination winery, with the majority of our wines sold on location through our wineshop. We have been recognized as a leader in sustainability, and we are expanding our organic program with 2 new local vineyards. SummerGate is excited to offer the opportunity to work with unusual varieties in an organic setting: Siegerrebe, Muscat Ottonel, and Kerner, as well as the more familiar Riesling, and our very first crop of Pinot Noir. The vineyard worker position encompasses all aspects of vineyard operations throughout the lifecycle of the vine; from spring pruning to fall harvest; as well as additional work on the winery property. You’ll work with others who are passionate about grapes, wine, and organic practices. You will hold responsibilities vital to producing quality wine and an excellent wine experience for our customers.
Duties and responsibilities: Complete routine viticulture activities under the supervision of Vineyard Manager. Tasks can include but are not limited to: • Vine pruning • Leaf pulling • Hedging • Cluster thinning • Some equipment operation • Tying of vines to trellis • Trellis construction • Weed control • Grass cutting • Harvesting
Qualifications: • Ability to work outdoors under varying conditions • Ability to work independently without constant supervision • Reliable transportation • Vineyard or farming experience preferred
Physical requirements: Standing for extended periods of time, walking, bending, crouching and kneeling. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Will be exposed to seasonal weather conditions.
Compensation: $14-$18 per hour based on experience and/or completion of a viticulture program
